Make Your Own Electric Motor Car

Hybrid cars are among the fastest sellers of all times. The combination of electric and gasoline powered makes them among the most fuel efficient vehicles on the planet.  But they are still just a stepping stone.

Today there are several start-up automobile or environmental science companies looking for venture capital to complete their all electric car projects. There are also some existing aftermarket mechanics setting up shop as local “backyard” conversion experts. Big or small, their goal is the same; to produce an all electric vehicle (ev).

The editors at We Make Hybrids just published an introduction to a family that worked out most of the problems the big guys are having nearly 15 years ago.  That;s when Les and Jane Oke set out to “live off the grid.” Their goal was to become completely energy self-sufficient – without giving up any of the comforts that go along with energy consumption.
They worked out ways to generate their own heat and home electricity. Powering their car with electricity they generated themselves proved a little more difficult, but in the end they worked it out.

Their electric car had a top speed of 50 mph and a range of about 100 miles.  That’s not far off from the performance of the new Zenn electric cars slowly spreading across the US from Canada.  But with an average conversion cost way under $1,000 to the new Zenn costs of between $12-15,000 that’s where the similarity ends.

The Okes have recently ventured online to sell, not their cars, but the plans, equipment lists and instructions needed to convert any gas or diesel car, SUV or diesel to be an electric motor car.  Here’s where you can read all about it.
